Butterfly - Gardening Report
Fran Smith
Goals:
The goal for this administration has been to increase stewardship of our environment and promote and expand butterfly habitats.
There has been an increase of butterfly projects, gardens and work with children.
Many groups are tagging Monarchs and obtaining the status of Monarch sites.
This chairman has been in each of the states in Central Region during this administration visiting projects, gardens and giving talks or site presentations.
This chairman has written the National Butterfly Chairman - but has not received an communication - email is not the answer.
A 12 year project of this chairman has been sharing and working with the fourth grade, young people ( 4 or 5 classes, 125 + students per year ) sharing her own butterfly habitat and being a resource person. We tag the Monarchs each fall. We have heard that some have reached Mexico and sites along the migration pattern. Over 1,000 young people have shared our pleasure and knowledge of butterflies and their habitats.
I have attended the National Convention, both Central Region Meetings (and provided an exhibit at each meeting) as well as my own state meeting and workshops.
Invite a butterfly to live in your garden...Provide for it's needs with a sunny, warm, sheltered area and plants (continuous seasons) for both the larva and the adult butterfly. Eliminate the use of pesticides and herbicides.
These amazing, fragile creatures will supply motion, beauty and interest that will fascinate all ages. Their destiny is in our hands. DARE we leave less for those of tomorrow than we have received and enjoyed today.
Be involved, Stay involved.
