Janet Hickman

President of Michigan

Theme: "Grow in our use of Technology"

Greetings from Michigan!  I am excited to be President of Michigan Garden Clubs.

Our emphasis for the next two years will be to grow in our use of technology to allow us to better share with all our members.  We’ll be doing more with our website, Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest to reach out to our club members and enhance our communications.  At the same time, with our continued emphasis on Michigan Pollinator Gardens, we will be encouraging members to participate in the Million Pollinator Garden Challenge and our awards will align with Pollinator Gardening, including youth activities to create pollinator gardens, which really is about creating or re-creating habitat for our pollinators.

We are learning more and more that it’s not enough to have healthy habitat here and there.  If we are going to truly have a lasting, positive impact for pollinators, we must be creating a network, or corridors, of appropriate habitat, in short, the entire ecosystem, that is friendly to pollinators.

We will also step up our award program for High School students participating in the NGC essay contest, which will emphasize the importance of preserving and protecting native habitat.

We will continue to promote the Black Swallowtail butterfly as the State of Michigan symbol for pollinators.  This butterfly is native to Michigan and is a year-round resident, making it an excellent teaching tool for our children.

Lastly, we wouldn’t be ‘Growing and Sharing’ if we weren’t also working on utilizing available technologies to streamline our administrative procedures to make it easier for Board Members to accomplish their jobs.

We have a lot to do, but we are focused and have a solid foundation to build upon.  I’m looking forward to working with all of you.

Growing and sharing through gardening,
